With my thin soil method, I expect a work cycle of roughly six months. At that point, the tank may still look clean, but I expect the soil’s nutrients and buffering capacity to have declined.
I use a soft reset to extend the working life of the setup and keep it functioning.
What I do
- Add a little more soil.
- Carry out a 100% water change.
- Clean the sponge filter. I generally do very little sponge cleaning during the six-month cycle unless a dirty batch of soil makes it necessary.
Mindset
I treat a soft reset as part of my regular farm maintenance. My tanks are set up for breeding, and refreshing them on a schedule helps me maintain production.
Farm note: I watch for slower breeding and changes in the water before the system reaches a crisis. Waiting until a tank crashes means leaving maintenance too late.
