On my thin soil method, I expect roughly a six-month work cycle. After that, the tank isn’t necessarily dead or filthy — the nutrients are exhausted and buffering isn’t as strong.
A soft reset extends life and keeps the system functioning.
What I do
- Add a bit more soil
- Do a 100% water change
- Clean the sponge (I usually don’t clean sponges much during the six months unless a dirty soil batch forces it)
Mindset
Soft reset is maintenance rhythm, not panic. I prefer tanks set up to breed — and I refresh them on a schedule so production doesn’t quietly die.
Farm note: If you wait until everything crashes, you’ve waited too long. Watch breeding slowdown and water behavior before the crash.
